In 1949, Pilot Radio Corporation unveiled a new television receiver which retailed under one hundred dollars. Known as the Candid T-T” unit, it had a tiny 3 inch direct view picture tube and weighed less than 15 pounds. The set is completely portable and is available with an alligator leatherette carrying case at additional charge. The tube was black and white, buy usually looked more green and gray. The size was so small that children would often still their eyes directly in front of the picture tube which could heat up to a couple hundred degrees. Hence. this is the set the mothers decried, “Don’t sit so close, you’ll go blind”. They soon released an enlarger lens to keep a safe distance and increase the viewing size to 5 inches. The set uses 21 tubes and offers full 13 channel coverage.
