THE GENERAL ELECTRIC model 10T6 was nicknamed “ the locomotive” because of its sleek deco shape. It is also significant innovation in that it is made of bakelite.
Bakelite was one of the first man made substances. This early plastic, patented in 1909, could withstand high temperatures and did not conduct electricity. It was used in radios, kitchenware, jewelry children’s toys, gun stocks and this television.
Bakelite was designated a National Historic Chemical Landmark on November 9, 1993, by the American Chemical Society in recognition of its significance as the world's first synthetic plastic.
